We said goodbye to one of our most treasured children’s authors this week. Jan Berenstain died at the age of 88 last Friday, and she will be very much missed. Her collaborator and husband went ahead of her in 2005. Stan and Jan met their first day of of class at the Philadelphia Museum of Industrial Art, they were married five years later. Luckily for us they began writing The Berenstain Bears series in 1962 with The Big Honey Hunt. They did write other books, but are remembered for their prolific [over 300] Berenstain Bears books. We have the adventures of The Berenstain Bears in both English and Spanish. There have also been Television shows based on the famous Bears. The Berenstain Bears are famous for teaching us lessons on everything from kindness to prejudice. “Family values is what we’re all about,” Jan Berenstain told an interviewer last year. Here at the Orland Library we have quite a few of The Berenstain Bears books. We also have a couple videos -The Berenstain Bears In the Dark and The Berenstain Bears double feature [The Berenstain Bears’ Christmas Tree and The Berenstain Bears’ meet Big Paw]. If you have never read a Berenstain Bear book do yourself a favor and check one out.

So true Estel. I recall Linda using one of the Bearenstain Bear story quotes when getting a very young Mychal to do his First Grade Homework. She told him ” Not yet, not yet, my son. First come the lessons then comes the fun.” I don’t know why that has stayed with me over the years. Maybe because it was a good way to instill a good work ethic.
