I am not referring to the Andy Williams song. I am referring to the fact that Sunday is Superbowl Sunday, as beloved an event for adults everywhere as Christmas is for children.

This upcoming Superbowl is an extra special one at my house. The San Francisco 49ers are making a return to “the big game” after an eighteen year absence. They join only The Pittsburgh Steelers at making six return visits to the Superbowl.

The 49ers have a fan base commonly known as The 49er Faithful, these are the true-blue fans that stand by them even when they are not playing in playoffs or Championship games. Needless to say,ย  these fans are ecstatic at this moment in time. We have at least ten books about the San Francisco 49ers who have arguably the greatest run of any pro football team in the history of the game. Between 1981 and 1994 they appeared in five Superbowls.

There are many elements that make this a special game. A huge one is this is the first time in the history of The Superbowl that two brothers will be squaring off against each other. Jim Harbaugh is the coach of the San Francisco 49ers and John Harbaugh is the coach of the Baltimore Ravens. Another element is that young Colin Kaepernick is quarterbacking the 49ers after replacing Alex Smith in the 7th game of the season. To learn more about the San Francisco 49ers or The Superbowl in general just visit The Orland Free Library. Now I leave you with the catch that started it all, winning the NFC championship game on January 10th, 1981. It is simply known in football lore as “The Catch”, Joe Montana is the quarterback. Dwight Clark is the receiver.ย  If you care to watch it, just click on the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNDMHQkcw2E
